Basic Law Mooting Series

Presented by: Ashurst, Lipman Karas and Plowman Chambers
Workshop: 9 October 2020 (Online)
Competition: 17 October 2020 (Preliminaries) & 24 October 2020 (Finals)

Consisting of a workshop, a preliminary round and a final round competition, the Series provides law students a chance to moot on Basic Law problems, strengthening their understanding of constitutional issues in Hong Kong. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Basic Law Mooting Workshop was moved online. Despite such arrangements, the mini-lecture and sharing certainly helped participants acquire relevant knowledge regarding Constitutional Law and substantive mooting techniques.
We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to all awardees and express our heartfelt gratitude to all adjudicators for their support, including the Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas Au J.A. and Mr. Paul Harris S.C.. Their invaluable comments and insight have undoubtedly enlightened participants and allowed them to gain a better understanding of Constitutional Law in Hong Kong.

9th Hong Kong Human Rights Moot

Presented by: Vidler & Co. Solicitors
Co-hosted by: the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong

The 9th Hong Kong Human Rights Moot was successfully held in February and July of 2020. The Competition, first launched in 2010 by Vidler & Co. Solicitors, strives to raise law students’ awareness on human rights issues. Its format differs from the other moots organised by AMS: while it comprises a Preliminary and Final Round, the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong would organise their own Preliminary Rounds among their own students and select a winning team to represent the school at the Finals.

Against the complex backdrop of COVID-19 this year, the Preliminary Round of the Competition at HKU was carried out on Zoom. Our experience in organising virtual moots in the Joint University Mooting Festival and Criminal Law Mooting Competition aided the success of the Preliminary Round. We are pleased to announce that the HKU team was awarded first place in the Final Round, which took place at Denis Chang’s Chambers on 11 July. We congratulate all awardees and would also like to express our most sincere appreciation to the adjudicators for their support, including the Honourable Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma,
Mr. Philip Dykes S.C. and Mr. Timothy Parker, without whom the success of the event would not have been possible.

Joint University Mooting Festival

Presented by: Chiu & Partners, Gall Solicitors, Liberty Chambers and Parkside Chambers
Workshop: 12 February 2020 (Cancelled)
Competition: 22 February 2020 (Preliminaries) & 27 June 2020 (Finals)

The Joint University Mooting Festival 2020 was successfully held in February and June of 2020. Consisting of a workshop, a preliminary round and a final round competition, the Festival provided students with a chance to moot on Contract law, strengthening their understanding of this important area of law. Although the Joint University Mooting Workshop was cancelled due to the development of the Covid-19 pandemic, participants were provided with workshop materials for them to develop a better understanding of mooting, the preparation involved, and relevant advocacy skills.

The Preliminary Round of the Competition marked our first-ever virtual mooting experience over Zoom, which went surprisingly well without any major technical difficulties. The Final Round, after multiple unfortunate postponements, was held at the University of Hong Kong on 27 June 2020. We congratulate all the awardees and would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the adjudicators for their support, including Dr. William Wong S.C., J.P., Mr. Andrew Bruce S.C. and Mr. Wesley Wong S.C.. Their presence was essential to the success of our event.

Criminal Law Mooting Competition

Presented by: Haldanes Solicitors and Notaries
Competition: 14 March 2020 (Preliminaries) & 27 June 2020 (Finals)

The Criminal Law Mooting Competition 2020 was successfully held in March and June of 2020. The Competition provided an opportunity for fellow law students to equip themselves with in-depth knowledge about criminal law, and a platform for fruitful intellectual exchange regarding current legal issues. This year, we expanded the size of the Competition and welcomed students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong to participate.
The Preliminary Round of the Competition, in light of the COVID-19 outbreak, was held in the format of an “electronic moot”, while the Final Round was held on 27 June 2020 at the University of Hong Kong.
We congratulate all the awardees on their spectacular performance in the Competition. We would like to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to all adjudicators in both the Preliminary and Final Rounds, including the Honourable Mr. Justice Bokhary, G.B.M., J.P., Mr. Graham Harris S.C. and Mr. Clive Grossman S.C. We would also like to sincerely thank our title sponsor, Haldanes Solicitors and Notaries, for their generous support that was instrumental to the Competition’s success.
